Drywall Installation & Repair Tips

Got a Gouge in Your Drywall? Fix It the Right Way With These Tips!

Even though is tough, it is not indestructible, and over time, drywall can sustain ugly cracks and holes. Fortunately, drywall is easy to repair, however, there is an art to it. Here’s what to do, and what not to do, when it comes to drywall installation & repair, so it is indiscernible to landlords, homebuyers, and guests.

DO remember that neatness does count

When cutting random strands of mesh tape or any frayed edges of drywall around holes and cracks before you apply your joint compound. Otherwise, your completed work will reveal any little bumps and other unsightly blemishes.

DON’T cut the cords

Always practice safety and never cut into a wall to repair a hole until you have first verified that no electrical cords or plumbing is not running through the wall behind it. If the hole is a couple of inches wide, first shine a flashlight in to see what is in there. If you have to enlarge the hole, make sure that you carefully cut horizontally using a drywall saw, and try not to go deeper than an inch. It is safe to assume that any live wires are close to an electrical outlet, however, never bet your life or life savings on it that homebuilders or renovators adhered to all the electrical and plumbing codes. Wires and pipes are frequently found where they should not be.

DO remember to keep it light

Less is considered more when it comes to applying joint compounds. This is because a thin coat is a great deal easier to sand than a thicker one, and, you are less likely to remove too much when sanding. Also, in order for the joint compound to be flush with the wall close to the repair site, “feather” the mud as you begin to apply it. This is done by holding the knife at a 70-degree angle, and pressing harder on the outer edges as you slowly move away from the center.
